Alan Mansfield
Sir Alan James Mansfield KCMG KCVO (born September 30, 1902 in Brisbane , † July 17, 1980 ) was an Australian lawyer and governor.
Life
He was born the third son of the English judge Edward Mansfield and his wife Margareth Elizabeth. He attended school in Sydney . His family owned land outside of Brisbane and lived in the suburbs.
After becoming a lawyer, he represented Australia on the Far Eastern Commission during the Tokyo trials .
On May 17, 1940, he became an assessor at the Queensland Supreme Court and on March 20, 1947 a judge there. On February 8, 1956, he was appointed President of the Court and remained so until February 21, 1966.
During his tenure as president of the court, he served several times as acting governor of Queensland. In 1966 he became Chancellor of the University of Queensland . In the same year he was appointed Governor of Queensland and was this until 1972.
Honors
- In 1958 he was named Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG).
- The suburb of Mansfield near the city of Brisbane was named after him.
