Walter Campbell

Sir Walter Benjamin Campbell , AC , QC (born March 4, 1921 in Burringbar , New South Wales - † September 4, 2004 ) was an Australian judge, administrator and governor. He was a Justice of the Queensland Supreme Court , Registrar of the University of Queensland and Governor of Queensland .

Life

Campbell was born in Burringbar , New South Wales . His parents were Archie Eric Gordon Campbell and Leila Mary nee Murphy. Archie Campbell was a honored soldier in World War I and received the Military Cross for fighting the Turks in Gaza and the Distinguished Service Order for fighting in Damascus. Leila Campbell died unexpectedly, leaving Walter and his brothers behind, who then grew up with their grandparents.

Campbell began studying at the University of Queensland in 1940, which he interrupted the following year to join the Royal Australian Air Force . Campbell was the freshman author of the school newspaper Semper Floreat . He graduated first class in law in 1948, with a Master of Arts degree in the previous year. He passed his flying exam at Amberley Air Base on December 7, 1941 and was transferred to the 67th Reserve Squadron, which oversaw the Australian east coast. As a flight instructor, he had an accident and suffered a serious knee injury. After his recovery he became the commandant of a Liberator base in Darling Downs .

Campbell was licensed in 1948 and became Queen's Counsel in 1960 . In 1967 he became a judge on the Supreme Court of Queensland .

Since 1963 a member of the College Council of the University of Queensland , he became Chancellor in 1977 and remained so until 1985.

Campbell became Governor of Queensland on July 22, 1985 and stepped down in July 1992.

Private

Campbell married Georgina Pearce in 1942 and has three children. He lived in Clayfield, Brisbane. He died on September 4, 2004 at the age of 83.

Honors

Walter Campbell was named a Knight Bachelor in 1979 . He has been a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) since 1989 . On January 1, 2001, he received the Centenary Medal .
