Arturo Sergi

Arthur Leslie Kagan Sergi (born November 8, 1925 in New York , † January 3, 2006 in Austin , Texas ) was an American opera singer (tenor) and professor of singing at the University of Texas at Austin.

Life

Arturo Sergi was the founder and rector of the "Ost-West Intern. Musik-Akademie" e. V., director of the "Altenburger Musiktheater-Akademie" with annual master classes for singing and until 2000 director and organizer of the "Altenburger Musik-Festival". Arturo Sergi sang in Germany for many years. B. at the Hamburg State Opera, in Frankfurt / M., Cologne, the Bayreuth Festival, the Munich Festival, in Berlin, the Royal Opera Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City as well as in many leading opera houses in the world. Five days before his death, on December 29th, 2005, he got in touch with music lovers in Altenburg to prepare a new project.

In 1998 he was awarded the “Culture Prize” of the city of Altenburg for his achievements and his musical creativity, and in August 2005 he was awarded the “Medal for Special Services of the Altenburger Land District”.

Arturo Sergi was also Cantor of the Beth Israel Congregation in Houston, Texas, during the 1970s and early 1980s.

He died in an accident.
