Leo VII (* in Rome ; † July 13, 939 there ) was Pope from January 3, 936 until his death.
Life
Leo VII, of Roman origin, Benedictine and previously cardinal priest of S. Sisto , was the first of five popes who were elected on the instructions of Prince Alberich II . He was Pope from January 3, 936 until his death on July 13, 939.
Leo VII campaigned with Alberich II for the monastery reform in the sense of the reform work of Cluny . For this purpose, Abbot Odo von Cluny was called to Rome. When the Italian King Hugo of Arles besieged Rome for the second time, the abbot brokered a peace between Alberich and the Italian king, which culminated in a formal marriage between Alda , Hugo's daughter, and Alberich.
During Leo's pontificate, the chronicler Flodoard of Reims from France visited the Pope. The Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen Adaldag was awarded the pallium . Leo called on Archbishop Friedrich von Mainz to drive out Jews who were unwilling to convert.
Since Leo VII was himself a Benedictine, he got involved a. a. for the restoration of monasteries, for example S. Paolo fuori le mura outside of Rome.
Pope Leo VII was buried in St. Peter ( Old St. Peter , the predecessor of St. Peter's Basilica ) in 939 .
