Friedrich (Mainz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich (* before 937; † October 25, 954 in Mainz ) was Archbishop of Mainz from 937 to 954 .

Its origin is unknown. After Hildebert's death in 937, the Saxon Friedrich, appointed by Otto I , emerged as archbishop for the first time politically. When the Franconian Duke Eberhard outraged Otto in 938, he brokered peace. In September 938, together with Bishop Rudhard of Strasbourg, he again brokered a peace between Eberhard and Otto. But Otto did not accept the mediator's proposal, so Friedrich switched to the opponent's side. In the battle of Andernach in October 939 he had to surrender to Otto, but was released in 940. In the 1940s, his relationship with Otto improved. The dioceses of Havelberg and Brandenburg were subordinated to Mainz. In the Reims dispute, which also involved the occupation of the Reims Erzstuhl, between Ludwig and Hugo , Friedrich brought a mandate from Pope Agapet II as papal legate . In 951, Friedrich took part in the Italian campaign. His delegation with Bishop Hartbert von Chur to the Pope probably failed because of Otto's coronation as emperor. In 954 he negotiated a peace ( pactum ) between Otto the Great and his son Liudolf . Friedrich campaigned against the interests of King Otto so persistently for the treaty that he made himself suspicious of the king's partisans. In response, Friedrich offered an oath to prove that he was never hostile to the king. At the Reichstag in Langenzenn in June 954 the two were reconciled. Otto issued Friedrich the oath by accepting the will for the deed.
