Hildebert (Mainz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hildebert also Hiltibert , (* before 923; † May 31, 937 in Mainz ) was Archbishop of Mainz from 927 to 937 and Abbot of Fulda from 923 to 927.

Hildebert, who came from an unknown Franconian family, was brought up in the Fulda monastery and was a monk and abbot there before he was raised to the Mainz ore chair in 927. Hildebert presided over the Synod of Erfurt in 932. The coronation and anointing of King Otto I was carried out by Hildebert. As Archbishop of Mainz, he was able to prevail in the dispute against the Archbishops of Trier and Cologne . Archbishop Wigfried of Cologne only assisted him at the coronation . The precedence over the other archbishops was left to him because of his high reputation. He must have fully supported the policies of Henry I and Otto I.

In older Mainz diocesan calendars, his day of remembrance was given for May 31st.
