Elsa (lioness)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lioness Elsa (January 1956 - January 24, 1961 ) was a lioness raised in Kenya by the naturalist couple George and Joy Adamson , whose life the foster mother recorded in three books:

  • Born free. A lioness in two worlds ( Born Free )
  • The lioness Elsa and her cubs (English Living Free )
  • Free forever (Engl. Forever Free )

Born Free was translated into 33 languages and the Elsa books are still popular today. Most of the proceeds from the first editions were used for the Elsa Wild Animal Appeal Organization founded by Joy Adamson , which was dedicated to the protection of wild animals and their habitats.

The BBC filmed this true story in 1965 in the film Born Free (German: Born Free - Queen of the Wild ). The main characters in this film, Virginia McKenna and her husband Bill Travers (for Joy and George Adamson), founded the Born Free Foundation in 1984 because they had been impressed by working on the film in Africa with tame and wild animals.
