organization

The Born Free Foundation is committed to endangered wildlife species in their natural environment and in captivity. She attaches great importance to the protection of animals as individuals and the environment as a whole. At the same time, she is committed to increasing public awareness that wild animals can remain in their natural habitats. This also includes the abolition of zoos.

In 1966 McKenna and Travers worked together on the film Born Free . Affected by the situation of wild animals, they began to speak out in favor of wild animals and against zoos through several films and documentaries. In 1984 the Zoo Check Campaign was founded . This was followed by the official establishment of the Born Free Foundation on July 20, 1998.

Born Free Foundation's managing director is the son of the two founders, Will Travers. The head office is in Great Britain. It is recognized as a registered charity in England and Wales.

Zoo Check Campaign

The Zoo Check Campaign (German: Zoo review campaign ) is at the center of Born Free's efforts. The aim of the campaign is to stop the suffering of captive animals. To this end, circuses and zoos are to be phased out.

Together with Endcap, Born Free developed the EU Zoo Inquiry in 2011 . According to the company, this is an independent study to evaluate the implementation of EU Directive 1999/22 in connection with the keeping of wild animals in zoos. This directive was put into effect by most of the EU member states in 2005 (and finally by Bulgaria and Romania in 2007). The investigation includes, among other things, an assessment of national law, law enforcement and compliance with the directive of a selected number of zoos in 21 Member States.
