Luca Antonio Predieri (also: Luc'Antonio Predieri, born September 13, 1688 in Bologna ; † January 3, 1767 ibid) was an Italian composer and violinist.

Life

Giacomo Cesare Predieri

Luca Antonio Predieri came from a family of musicians, his parents were Vitale Predieri and Maria Menzani. Luca Antonio made like most Bolognese musicians trained at the Capella Musicale of S. Petronio . He received violin lessons from Abondio Bini and Tomaso Antonio Vitali , teachers of counterpoint and composition were Giacomo Antonio Perti and his related musicians Giacomo Cesare Predieri (1671–1753), Angelo Predieri . In 1705 Luca Antonio Predieri was mentioned as a viola player to S. Petronio and from 1706 to 1711 as a violinist. Predieri was Kapellmeister at several Bolognese churches, including from 1728 to 1731 at the Capella musicale at the Cathedral of S. Petronio (1728-1731). In 1716 he was accepted as a composer in the Accademia Filarmonica , of which he was Principe in 1723.

After moving to Vienna in 1739, he succeeded Antonio Caldara as vice conductor of the Viennese court orchestra , which was directed by Johann Joseph Fux . After his death in 1741 Predieri took over the sole management of the court orchestra until 1751. Predieri composed seven oratorios, sacred music and around 30 operas, which were mainly performed in Florence and Vienna. During his lifetime he was counted among the most famous opera composers of his generation alongside Nicola Porpora and Leonardo Vinci .

Only a few of his instrumental compositions have survived, including a Sinfonia in Bb and a violin concerto with a virtuoso final movement, which was published in an anthology with 12 other concerts by various Italian composers, which was published in 1716 under the title Concerti a cinque by Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam.

More family members

Numerous other members of the Predieri family were musicians, mainly active in Bologna. Among them was Giacomo (Maria) Predieri (1611–1695), from 1679 to 1693 organist at the cathedral in Bologna, as well as cornet player and trumpeter and one of the founders of the Accademia Filarmonica . His nephew Antonio Predieri (around 1650-1710) is mentioned as an opera singer (tenor). Angelo Tommaso Predieri (1655-1731) was a singer, composer and conductor and one of the teachers of Padre Martini . Giacomo Cesare Predieri (1671–1753), another nephew of Giacomo and an uncle of Luca Antonio Predieri, was a composer (especially of oratorios), singer and conductor at six institutions in Bologna. Giovanni Battista Predieri (around 1730–1755) was a composer and conductor.
