Girolamo Abos (born November 16, 1715 in Valletta , † October 1760 in Naples ) was a Maltese composer of the Neapolitan School .

Life

Girolamo Abos went to Naples in 1725. He received his training from 1729 at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo in Naples. His teachers were Ignazio Prota and Francesco Feo . He also studied with Gaetano Greco , Gerolamo Ferraro and Francesco Durante . His first opera Le due zingare simili was performed at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples in 1742. Abos was a music teacher in various conservatories in Naples from 1742. In October of the same year he became “maestro aggiunto” [assistant teacher] of Ignazio Prota at the Conservatorio di Sant'Onofrio a Porta Capuana . In 1748 Prota died. Until his death he was a singing teacher at the Conservatorio. From 1742 to 1743 he was “secondo maestro” alongside Francesco Feo with the Poveri di Gesù Cristo. 1743 deputy of Ignazio Prota, Leonardo Leo and Durante at the Conservatorio di Sant'Onofrio a Porta Capuana. In 1749 he became conductor and organist at the Metropolitan Church in Naples. Shortly after the world premiere of Tito Manlio in 1751, he married Andrea Gautier. 1754 “secondo maestro” at the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini . In 1756 he traveled to London as a harpsichordist and became "Maestro al harpsichord" at the Italian theater. In 1759 he gave up teaching. Abos also worked as Kapellmeister at various churches in Naples.

Among his students were Giovanni Paisiello , Niccolo Piccinni and Benigno Zerafa. His works were performed across Europe with varying degrees of success, for example his Tito Manlio in London in 1756 .
