Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach
Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (born January 3, 1824 in Dresden , † May 6, 1889 in Hamburg ) was a Saxon , German botanist . He mainly specialized in orchids . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Rchb.f. "
Life
He was the son of the botanist Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (1793–1879), who also wrote the Icones Florae Germanicae et Helveticae . This explains the addition “f.” Or “fil.” To his botanical abbreviation, from the Latin filius “son”.
Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach began studying orchids at the age of 18 and helping his father with writing.
In 1852 he received his doctorate with a thesis on orchid pollen and in 1863 became professor of botany and director of the botanical garden in Hamburg . In 1854 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
It was precisely at this time that many newly discovered orchid species were sent to Europe from South America and Asia, and Reichenbach identified, described and classified a large number of these species.
After the death of John Lindley , the father of modern orchid science in 1865, Reichenbach became the world's leading orchid expert.
He bequeathed his extensive estate, consisting of a herbarium and library, to the Natural History Museum in Vienna and not, as one might assume, to the Botanical Garden in London, on the condition that it would not be consulted for 25 years. Reichenbach may have decided to take this step out of a reservation about Robert Allen Rolfe , a self-taught orchid expert who was appointed leading taxonomist in London.
After Reichenbach's death, his work was continued by Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Kraenzlin (1847–1934).
Honors
After Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach, the orchid genera Reichantha Luer and Reichenbachanthus Barb.Rodr. named.
