Robert Allen Rolfe

Robert Allen Rolfe (* 1855 in Basford , Nottinghamshire , † 1921 in Richmond , Surrey ) was an English botanist who specialized in the study of orchids . He was the first curator of the Orchid Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew . He also founded The Orchid Review magazine , and published many articles on orchid hybrids . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Rolfe ".

Work, appreciations and miscellaneous

Rolfe was one of the few authors who quoted Gregor Mendel's work on plant hybrids before Mendel's rules were rediscovered in 1900.

The genus Allenrolfea from the family of amaranthaceae (Amaranthaceae) was developed by Otto Kuntze named in his honor. The orchid genera Rolfea Zahlbr. and Rolfeella Schltr. are named after him.

Rolfe was buried in Richmond Cemetery.
