The Bahn-Sozialwerk Foundation ( BSW ) is an operational social institution of Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Railroad Assets . Together with the charitable foundation Eisenbahn-Waisenhort (EWH), the BSW offers services for active and former railway employees as well as for their families. The BSW is closely linked to the EWH in the foundation family BSW & EWH , the board of directors is the same.

Financing and sponsorship

The foundations are supported by full-time and voluntary employees. The work is financed by sponsors and donations.

Goals and achievements

The foundations offer support in various life and crisis situations. Their services include measures

  • to cope with everyday life (through professional social counseling for psychological stress, parent-child coaching and addiction prevention, with offers to reconcile family and work as well as by supporting family carers as well as those in need of care in coping with daily challenges and much more)
  • to organize leisure time (e.g. in over 600 sponsored BSW groups that bring like-minded people together on cultural, railway-related and creative topics)
  • to promote relaxation (e.g. through mother / father-child cures, subsidized vacation programs for people with limited financial opportunities as well as supervised children's and youth holidays as well as recreational stays in their own holiday facilities)

Special services in need

In accordance with their provisions, the foundations can provide direct financial aid to the people affected in emergency situations. According to their own statements, this includes serious illness, deaths and disasters.

Award for skin cancer prevention in children

In 2018, the German Cancer Aid awarded the BSW for supporting the nationwide cancer prevention campaign "Clever in Sun and Shade". The foundation and its health partners were honored in the Deutsche Bahn AG day care center “Bahnbini” in Frankfurt / Main by TV presenter Susanne Klehn as “Ambassador for German Cancer Aid”. BSW CEO Margarete Zavoral described sun protection for children as a preventive measure against skin cancer as a very important task of the Deutsche Bahn kindergartens. Kita expert Franz Reinartz announced at the ceremony that cancer prevention was an important topic in the daycare centers in the federal states supported by Kita / Concept, including 2019. The “Sun Protection Clown” project weeks are currently being implemented in 17 other facilities.
