Bavarian AV were locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways . With its large drive wheel diameter, this design can be regarded as the first express locomotive of the Bavarian State Railways. With it, the procurement of simply coupled locomotives in Bavaria ended.

The AV was developed from type A IV . In contrast to the A IV, it had a lower boiler and a wider fire box . In addition, the accessibility of the control has been improved. Only later did the vehicles receive a steam dome . Since the vehicles on the southern side of the Danube were powered by peat , they had a pear-shaped chimney . The vehicles were not standardized at the time and had different dimensions.

The locomotives were a Tender equipped to type 3 T 4.8.
