The D III of the Royal Bavarian State Railroad was a tank locomotive for shunting and Vizinalbahn service .

Krauss had shown a locomotive of this type, which was developed according to the same design principles as the B VII , at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 and sold it to the Bebra-Hanauer Bahn . The Bavarian State Railroad also decided to purchase six locomotives, probably for comparison purposes with the Maffei class D I machines that had been in service since 1871 .

The D III were equipped with an external all-control system and a closed driver's cab . The storage containers protruded beyond the rear drive axle.

The locomotives were partly used in branch line service, partly in light shunting service and the like. a. used in Munich and Ingolstadt as well as in Lindau to operate the Lake Constance trajectory ships. Since the machines could not come close to the performance of the D IV due to their too light construction , they were retired between 1894 and 1897. One machine each was sold to the Röthenbach – Weiler local railway and to the Bayerische Cementwerke Bergwerk Marienstein , all the others were scrapped.
