The vehicles of the type Bayerische BV were towing tender locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (abbreviation for BV, spoken Be Fünf).

description

It was the first type of locomotive to be procured by the Bavarian State Railways in large numbers (101 vehicles). The first batch of 14 units largely corresponded to the V series . The second, 15-piece series had a Crampton type boiler . The first two construction lots had not yet been provided with a steam dome , which, however, was retrofitted later. The third construction series was equipped with a steam dome on the rear part of the boiler, while the fourth and final construction lot had a steam dome in front.

The machines were coupled with type 3 T 6.5 or 3 T 7 tenders .

The Nordgau, today Nuremberg

One example of the series - the NORDGAU - is now owned by the DB Museum in Nuremberg . It is the oldest surviving locomotive in Germany. The NORDGAU was built in 1853 by the Maffei company in Munich under factory number 151 and ran under number 125 on the Bavarian State Railways. It was in operation until 1907. In over fifty years in the company, it has undergone many changes and modifications. When the increasing speeds and the wind made the locomotive crew more difficult, for example, the driver's cab was added.

In 1925 the main workshop in Munich cut it open lengthways in order to make the functionality of a steam locomotive visible: a side view shows an intact locomotive and on the other side in the longitudinal section are all the technical innards, in particular the paths that the steam takes when it is heated to drive piston takes to see. So you can explain how a steam locomotive works in real size. Since 2007 the popular sight has been supplemented by an interactive installation.

It is next to the vehicles of the 19th century in vehicle hall I in the main building of the museum.
