The Bavarian EG 2 was an electric freight locomotive series of the Royal Bavarian State Railways , which was intended for operation on the Freilassing – Berchtesgaden line. It was similar to the Prussian EG 511-537 and therefore more conventional than the EG 1 . No witnesses have survived from EG 2.
history
The Salzburg – Freilassing – Berchtesgaden line was electrified between 1912 and 1914. The Bavarian State Railroad wanted to test electric train operations with it. In 1912, twelve test locomotives were ordered for this purpose, including the EG 2. Each of these locomotive series received its electrical equipment from a different company. All other ordered locomotives could be delivered on time by 1915, but the completion of EG 2 was hindered by the First World War , so that it did not start operating until five years later. The locomotives were ordered as Bayerische EG 2 × 2/2 , due to the late delivery they only bore the designation EG 2 . From 1926 the locomotives were designated as E 70 21 and E 70 22 . The performance of the locomotives was in the range of the other locomotives built for this route. Little is known about its use, only a photo shows the locomotive in 1922 on the Freilassing – Berchtesgaden railway line . In any case, they must have proven themselves in operation, because they were still in the inventory of the Deutsche Bundesbahn , where they were not taken out of service until 1950/1951.
technical features
With its two low, round stems, under each of which a two-axle rod drive was housed, the EG 2 was somewhat similar to the E 71 , but the exterior design had unmistakably Bavarian elements, such as transition steps on the front and railings past the stems and the To discover locomotive body design. However, there were significant differences in transformers and controls. There is a clear contrast to EG 1 with its stemless single axle drive, which was only installed in series locomotives a few years after the completion of EG 2. On one side of EG 2 there was only a single window between the cab doors, while on the other there were two. The main frame was a profile steel frame to transmit the tensile and impact forces. The connection to the bogies was made via spring-loaded stamps.
The main transformer was designed as an externally ventilated dry-type transformer, it was located exactly in the middle of the locomotive body in a closed high-voltage chamber. On the secondary side, it had 14 taps for the traction motor control and the auxiliaries. The documents do not reveal whether he later received a tap for the train heating. The locomotives were equipped with two 16-pole single-phase motors in series . The control took place via a slide control common at the time , of which the E 90 was known to be cheap to maintain and quite difficult to operate.
