The Bavarian EG 1 was an electric freight locomotive series of the Royal Bavarian State Railways for the Freilassing – Berchtesgaden railway line ; unlike many designs of the time, they were equipped with single-axle drive motors with pawl-bearing traction motors .

history

The Salzburg – Freilassing – Berchtesgaden line was electrified between 1912 and 1914. The Bavarian State Railroad wanted to test electric train operations with it. In 1912, twelve test locomotives were ordered for this purpose, including the EP 3 and EP 4 and the EG 1. Each of these locomotive series received its electrical equipment from a different company. After the Prussian EV 1/2, these locomotives can be regarded as one of the first locomotives with a single axle drive in Germany . Probably the Bavarian State Railways expected better cornering, less tire wear and rail wear from this construction . Both locomotives were intended for freight train service on this route. From 1926 the locomotives of the EG 1 series were designated as E 73 01 and E 73 02. Their running properties were satisfactory and they were considered to be less prone to failure. In terms of performance, they were stronger than the E 36 and E 70 , and their speed corresponded to the intended task area. Otherwise, there is little to read in the literature about the use of locomotives. Their withdrawal dates are 1937 (E 73 01) and 1941 (E 73 02). The former E 73 02 was then converted into a snow plow . This existed until 1982 and was then scrapped.

technical features

The locomotives' bogies had a relatively small wheelbase of 2.5 m. The traction motors, fastened in a pawl bearing construction , were located on the inside between the axles, resulting in a very small overhang. The frame of them consisted of sheet metal cheeks with riveted cross stiffeners. There were no couplings between the bogies. All bearings were designed as plain bearings . The main frame was made of profile iron and reinforced with the buffer beams, diagonal and cross struts. The pulling and buffing device was not continuous, but attached to the frame. The locomotive body consisted of the engine room and two end cabs. The front sides were made in the same way as the E 36 . The roof was designed to be removable with the upper half of the side walls. In the side walls there were two lower air openings.

The main transformer of the locomotive was designed as a dry-type transformer. The locomotive had a separate fan for this, which also cooled the traction motors. These were designed as eight-pole single-phase series motors that were connected in parallel with one another . They were controlled by an electromagnetic contactor control in nine continuous speed levels.
