The locomotives of the class 98 11 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn were conversions of the Bavarian class GtL 4/4 (class 98 8-9 ).
Since the running characteristics of the 98 10 series were not yet sufficient to significantly increase the speed of local trains in Bavaria, the Reichsbahn decided in 1934 to convert a GtL 4/4 locomotive (the 98 906). Among other things, it received an additional front running axle. For this, the boiler and driver's cab had to be moved forward, which required a height of 250 mm.
After the tests with the vehicle were successful, it was decided to modify a further 26 machines by 1939, and then put them into a new series. Another copy followed in 1940 and 1941. The conversions were given the numbers 98 1101–1129.
The maximum permissible speed of the conversions could be increased to 55 km / h, compared to 40 km / h for the GtL 4/4 and 45 km / h for the 98 10 series .
All 29 locomotives survived the Second World War . Except for the locomotive 98 1108, which came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , all remained with the Deutsche Bundesbahn . The vehicle in the GDR was retired in 1967; the machines in the west between 1960 and 1968.
