From 1883 this company had a direct railway connection built between Berlin and Copenhagen , which ran via the Warnemünde – Gedser railway and ferry connection . It was founded on June 10, 1883 and was a subsidiary of the Société Belge de chemins de fer , which in turn was owned by the Société générale de Belgique .

history

Deutsch-Nordischer Lloyd was a company founded to build and operate the Neustrelitz – Rostock – Warnemünde main line and to manufacture and operate a steamship line from Warnemünde to a Danish port on the island of Falster . The chairman of the supervisory board was the mayor of Rostock, Georg Friedrich Adolf Simonis. At the general assembly of May 8, 1884, the subsequent construction of a connecting line between Vollrathsruhe and Dahmen to connect the local sugar factory was decided.

In March 1884 the capital was composed as follows:

  • 4,500,000 M. St. Prior Actien each (Lit. A and B), in pieces of 500 M., taken over by the Société Belge de chemins de fer .
  • 6,000,000 marks in 4% Priority bonds according to the privilege of the city of Rostock, guaranteed for the entire construction period and the opening of the entire route for the first five years.
  • Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin 625,000 marks for the improvement of the port of Warnemünde and an additional 10,000 million marks per kilometer of the route in this area and 20,000 marks per kilometer of the Warnemünde – Rostock route.
  • The Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz provided a subsidy of 6,000 marks per kilometer of its route.

Lloyd Railway

Shortly after it was founded, the company received approval from both Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz to build the so-called Lloydbahn. The line was completed on June 1, 1886 and began operating.

The aim was to create the shortest railway connection between Berlin and Copenhagen, which ran from Neustrelitz in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz via Rostock to the port in Warnemünde . The company was commissioned, among other things, to expand the port in order to set up a regular ship connection to a Scandinavian port. She was financially supported by the Mecklenburg Grand Duchies. The estimated construction costs amounted to 15 million marks.

With the opening of the railway line, the company took over the existing mail steamer line to Nykøbing Falster from June 26, 1886 , for which new ships were procured.

After the extensive expansion of the port of Warnemünde and the construction of the ferry system , on September 30, 1903 in the presence of King Christian IX. of Denmark and Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin the opening of the railway ferry connection to Gedser. There was a connection to Nykøbing with the Nykøbing – Gedser line, which had existed since 1886 . The new railway line has cut the travel time from Berlin to Copenhagen by around five hours.
