The Ruta 1 , also called Mariscal Francisco Solano López , is a trunk road in Paraguay . The road connects the capital Asunción with Encarnación on the border with Argentina. It is 370 km long.

Street description

The Ruta 1 begins in the capital Asunción, the largest metropolitan area in Paraguay. Much of the road runs through built-up areas with better urban roads and lots of traffic. The road runs around 40 kilometers through densely populated area to Itá . The road between Asunción and San Lorenzo has 2x2 or 1x4 lanes, beyond the cities the road is mostly single-lane.

Ruta 1 at Encarnación

Outside the Asunción region, Ruta 1 leads south through relatively flat land with several villages in the area. This region is forested, but has several open areas with fields in some sections. Most of the places on the route have a grid structure. Ruta 1 runs through many cities as there are no bypasses. The south of Paraguay is less densely forested, open spaces dominate here. After San Ignacio , where the route 4 branches off to Paso de Patria , route 1 continues east to the reservoir of the Río Paraná . The last kilometers to Encarnación again consist of 2x2 lanes. On the Argentine side, in Posadas , the Ruta 1 is continued as the RN 105. In the northern urban area of Encarnación, the 247 km long Route 6 branches off, which leads to Minga Guazú .

history

End point of route 1: bridge over the Paraná

The Ruta 1 Mariscal Francisco Solano López is named after the second President of Paraguay Francisco Solano López (1827-1870), during whose tenure the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870) fell.

The Ruta 1 is traditionally the most important route in the south of Paraguay and a connection between the two large rivers Río Paraguay and Rio Paraná. In 2012 the entire route was paved. On the border with Argentina, a large cable-stayed bridge was built over the Paraná, the 2,550 meter long Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz , which has a main span of 579 meters. The bridge was opened to traffic in April 1990.
