Wilhelm Kaune (born September 16, 1895 - † July 19, 1981 in Ahstedt, Hildesheim-Marienburg district ) was a master wheelwright and Low German writer . In his time he was considered the only representative of East Westphalian dialect literature.

Language area

The East Westphalian-speaking area roughly encompasses southern Lower Saxony east of the Weser, extends to Hanover, Celle and Gifhorn in the north, to Braunschweig in the east and to the Harz in the south. The East Westphalian Platt differs in vocabulary and word formation as well as in intonation from the neighboring linguistic landscapes. Characteristic is the formation of the personal pronouns me and me (mek / mik), dir and dich (dek / dik), us (ösch or esch / üsch or isch) and you jök (jek) / jük (jüch), furthermore the diphthongization or triphthonging of long vowels. The u appears as iu, the ü as ui, the i as öi.

Life

Wilhelm Kaune was the eldest son of a carpenter. He could not pursue his wish to become a teacher, because after the early death of his mother it was necessary to quickly find a job and to support the family - he had six younger siblings. He became a wheelwright, became self-employed as a master craftsman in 1919 and worked in his profession for over 50 years. He became head master of the wheelwright's guild, was on the board of the Kreissparkasse Hildesheim and on the board of the Kreisheimatbund, of which he was one of the founding members in 1957.

He was an employee of the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung , which published his articles under the abbreviation WK or WKA.

Wilhelm Kaune in his workshop

The picture shows him at work in his workshop. Always with him under his workbench or in the pocket of his work apron was a notebook or an order or invoice pad, in which he entered with a fountain pen or with a carpenter's pencil in beautiful Sütterlin script verses and thoughts that came to him while he was working.

He began to write poetry when he was still at school. When he was thirteen, he dealt with his mother's death in the poem De Mudder starv. His first collection of poems, Heimatklänge, appeared in 1924. It was followed by several books in High and Low German. Well over 600 lecture events and a series of radio broadcasts made him known in all of Ostfalen and beyond. Many of his poems were set to music, e. B. by Dr. Friedrich Spanuth and Ludwig Rahlfs .

In the obituary by District Director Ignaz Jung-Lundberg it says:

“Wilhelm Kaune belonged to the Hildesheimer Land. He was and remains the poet of Hildesheim's homeland. He is not just a local poet in the sense that he writes about the Hildesheim region and uses its dialect. Wilhelm Kaune was certainly also a local poet in this sense. But his work went beyond that. Kaune was a poet who dealt with the world as a creative personality. Kaune had that in common with all poets. As a local poet, however, he was deeply rooted in the area of the local environment. This environment not only provided him with the material and content of his work. He mainly dealt with her. But this little world meant no restriction for him. Wilhelm Kaune's poetry, like all good poetry, contains what is seen, heard and thought, arising from the personal experience of the poet. Wilhelm Kaune understood how to use the poetic form of this personal experience to make a generally valid statement. Wilhelm Kaune, as a local poet, has grown beyond the Hildesheim region and has made generally valid statements about people and their environment. He has awakened understanding for the high value that home means for everyone, consciously or unconsciously. "
