The Ruta 9 , officially Ruta Nacional N ° 9 "Dr. Carlos Antonio López " , also called Ruta Transchaco , is a trunk road in Paraguay . It forms a north-south connection in the west of the country. The road leads from the capital Asunción to the border with Bolivia and is the longest trunk road in the country with a length of 835 km.

Street description

The road begins in the north of the capital Asuncion on Ruta 3 . It crosses the Paraguay River on a large bridge, followed almost immediately by the sparsely populated Gran Chaco , a hot savannah that is opened up by the road. It leads through a sparsely populated area with relatively few settlements and is the only paved road through the northwest of Paraguay. In Pozo Colorado the Ruta 5 is crossed, the only other major paved road in western Paraguay. The area is very flat and partly wooded. The road ends at the border with Bolivia, where it merges into the Bolivian Ruta 11 . After a good 100 km you reach the city of Villamontes as the first large settlement .

A toll is levied for the road in three places :

  • at km 20: Puente Remanso
  • at km 49: Cerrito
  • at km 270: Pozo Colorado

history

The Ruta 9 is a strategic transport route from Paraguay. The area it traverses is one of the most sparsely populated in South America, often with less than one inhabitant per square kilometer. The northern 130 kilometers were not asphalted in 2013. The through traffic to Bolivia is on an unnumbered road in the west.

On August 19, 1978, the Puente Remanso was opened north of the capital across the Río Paraguay; this is the only bridge over the river in Asunción.
