Villa Hayes is the capital of the Presidente Hayes Department in Paraguay with around 19,000 inhabitants. It is located on the western bank of the Paraguay River, around 30 kilometers north of Asunción . It is known as the gateway to the Chaco .
history
In today's Villa Hayes, the Reducción Melodía was founded in 1786 by Francisco Amancio González Escobar . After the decline of this settlement, the city was re-established in 1855 under the name Nueva Burdeos ("New Bordeaux ") under the name of Nueva Burdeos ("New Bordeaux ") , led by Vicente Barrios , later brother-in-law of the Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano López . Ultimately, however, this attempt at re-establishment was unsuccessful, so that in the following year there was a new attempt under the name Villa Occidental , which this time stood. After the Triple Alliance War , the city was annexed by Argentina and declared the capital of the Chaco national territory . In 1879 it was returned to Paraguay through the mediation of the 19th US President Rutherford B. Hayes in the border conflict. The city was then renamed Villa Hayes in his honor.
economy
Leather production has long been an important branch of the economy. There are two tanneries that process over 1000 hides a day and some of them export. There are also two frozen meat factories of the Neuland cooperative in the city .
On November 28, 2018, the first ironworks in Paraguay was inaugurated in Villa Hayes , which recycles scrap metal and uses it to produce steel bars.
