The place is the seat of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate Pilcomayo , for which the Cathedral of Santa Maria was consecrated in 2000 . The grave of the popular missionary and Bishop Pedro Shaw is located in the former San Miguel Cathedral on the military site .

During the Chaco War , the place - then still called Fortin Camacho - was an important military base. It was the capital of the Boquerón Department until 1973 .

A United States military base has been located in the city since 2005 . For this purpose, a treaty between the USA and Paraguay resolved to impunity for American soldiers, extended the residence permit for US troops temporarily stationed here to 18 months and increased the number of US soldiers participating in 13 joint military maneuvers.

The military airfield, Aeropuerto Dr. Luis Maria Argana Internacional ( IATA code : ESG ), is designed to accommodate a large number of soldiers, has an extraordinary radar system, large hangars and a runway that is 3800 m long and 80 m wide, which is oversized for the aircraft of the Paraguayan Air Force . The strategic importance of the military base results from its proximity to Bolivia with its natural gas and oil reserves, its proximity to the Acuífero Guaraní , one of the three largest drinking water reservoirs in the world.

The Ruta 9 , which leads from Asunción to the northwest to the border with Bolivia, runs through the village .
