Loma Plata is a city in the north-western Boquerón department in Paraguay . It is located in the Gran Chaco , a savannah landscape that occupies the whole of western Paraguay and extends south into Argentina and north into Bolivia , 450 km from the state capital Asunción . It houses part of the Mennonite colonies in the Chaco Paraguay. The population is 16,460 ( DGEEC 2017)
history
In the origins of the Loma Plata Colony, settlers had to overcome many adversities, such as attacks from wildlife and the lack of medical assistance. Around 101 villages form the colony in this area. It is the first colony of Mennonite immigrants in the region, it was established in 1927 and is an important urban and administrative center of the Menno cooperatives.
Infrastructure, economy
The residents of Loma Plata are engaged in agriculture , livestock and industry . They are organized in the Sociedad Cooperativa Colonizadora.
In the experimental farm of Isla Po'i, studies and experiments are carried out in different areas of agriculture: cotton , peanuts , sesame , tomatoes , peppers , papaya , direct sowing methods, crop rotation variation and others. Different types of grass for animal feeding are being experimented with, forage tested and tolerances of the soil, climate and other conditioning factors for animal production. As well as ornamental plants and fruit trees and trees that are indigenous to the Chaco are grown for afforestation.
