The Friendship Bridge ( Spanish Puente Internacional de la Amistad , Portuguese Ponte Internacional da Amizade ) is a road bridge that crosses the Río Paraná and connects Ciudad del Este in Paraguay with Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil .
On the Paraguayan side the Ruta 7 leads to the bridge, on the Brazilian side the BR-277 federal road.
In 1956, the two countries agreed to build the bridge, which was built between 1957 and 1965. It was one of the largest concrete arch bridges of its time.

The bridge is 700 meters below the mouth of the Acaray in Paraná and almost 13 km downstream of the giant Itaipú - hydroelectric power plant , which was built from 1974 to 1982. 9.3 km below the bridge is the confluence of the Río Iguaçu with the Paraná in the Triple Frontera area between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
The Paraná valley is deeply cut and, depending on the water level, up to 70 m deep. Even at extremely low tide, the river is still 35 m deep and 250 m wide. At the time of the construction of the bridge - before the construction of the dams on the Paraná - the water level could rise by 10 m within 36 hours. The highest measured water level was 36 m above the low water. The abutments are still deep in the water today.

The bridge is 552.40 m long. Your 13.50 m wide deck has a 9.50 wide carriageway, which is separated from the 2 m wide sidewalks by strong steel grids. The lane has no special markings and is generally used in three lanes, leaving enough space for mopeds and motorbikes to push past the cars. The well-frequented sidewalks have had a curved roof for sun and weather protection and high railings on the outside to prevent suicides.
The reinforced concrete - arch bridge has a large, unarticulated arch with a span m of 290 and a rising height m of the 53rd It consists of a three-cell, rectangular, 13.00 m wide box girder , which is 4.80 m high at the abutments. In the apex of the arch, it merges with the deck slab over a length of 79.40 m and then has a height of 3.20 m.
On the abutments stand 9.60 wide and 22.60 long pillars made of reinforced concrete. Its hollow cross-section is stiffened by one longitudinal and four transverse walls. They have water inlet and outlet openings to reduce buoyancy. They are used to absorb the wind and water pressure on the arch, the pillars and the road girder.
The roadway girder is elevated with very slim-looking, round reinforced concrete columns of different thickness, which also have a hollow cross-section.
The building was planned and executed by a consortium of Constructora Rabello and SOTEGE. The structural engineering was done by José Rodrigues Leite de Almeida. Construction work began in 1957 with the clearing of the construction site and the construction site facilities.
The arch was made with falsework on the first 58 m on both sides , which was implemented as a reinforced concrete framework construction due to the frequent flooding . The average 170 m were obtained with a re-transferred to Hilfsabspannungen cantilever built.
