Career

society

Fonseca has played in various leagues and teams in Central and South America. The attacker began his career in 1989 at Deportivo Saprissa , next to LD Alajuelense one of the most successful clubs in the Primera División de Costa Rica , the top division in Costa Rica. After completing his first year as a professional, he was able to win the national championship with the club. At that time, however, he was not yet used. It was only on June 1, 1991 that the offensive player made his league debut against ASODELI. In 1993 he triumphed in the international competition for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup . In the following season Fonseca won the championship with Saprissa for the second time and was able to defend it the following year. In addition, the CONCACAF Champions' Cup was won again, making the double perfect. In the two-time win of the Copa Interamericana , a competition for winners of the American continental championships, in 1993 and 1995 Fonseca was also there.

After six years at Deportivo, Fonseca decided to move abroad at the beginning of 1996. CF Pachuca lured him from the island state to Mexico . There it did not last long and in the same year he transferred to the Colombian club Independiente Medellín , only to switch to league rival América de Cali shortly afterwards . But even here he did not find the desired success and Fonseca returned to Costa Rica in mid-1997, where LD Alajuelense secured the attacker's services. Although he immediately won the Costa Rican championship again, the desired good comeback was canceled. Fonseca therefore moved abroad again, where he signed with CSD Comunicaciones in Guatemala . There the striker found his old strength and helped the team to success in 1999 and 2000 in the Liga Nacional de Guatemala . For the 2000/01 season, however, he returned to his hometown club Deportivio Saprissa. He was able to convince, but Fonseca preferred to try again in Mexico at CF La Piedad . However, as in the previous foreign stations, the attacker was not satisfied here either and soon returned to join LD Alajuelense for the second time. In five years there he was able to win the championship two more times in 2003 and 2005 and celebrate a success in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup for the third time. In the meantime, he was awarded twice for a short time to his old Guatemalan employer CSD Comunicaciones. In 2007 he moved within the league to Municipal Liberia , but decided to play again for CSD Comunicaciones after one season. There he ended his career at the end of 2010. In September 2012 he played three more times for AD Carmelita .

National team

Fonseca has been a Costa Rica national player since 1992 . With 47 goals now, he is the most successful goalscorer in the history of the national team. With his last success so far, the 47th goal, he was also able to achieve the 1000th goal since the Costa Rican selection existed. In 2002 he was part of the squad for the soccer world championships in Japan and South Korea . In the first round game he was in the starting line-up of his team, which they won 2-0 against China . However, Fonseca could not convince and was replaced shortly after half-time. He also missed the second group game and was just a spectator. In the decisive game for a place in the round of 16, coach Alexandre Guimarães only changed him in the 65th minute against Mauricio Solís . Nevertheless, the game against eventual world champions Brazil was lost 2: 5 and the team was eliminated due to the poorer goal difference. For the 2006 World Cup , Fonseca was no longer considered.

Fonseca has been nominated several times for the UNCAF Nations Cup . During his time as a national player, Costa Rica won the cup five times. In the 1999 tournament, the attacker was also voted the best player in the competition. At that time he got five hits. With a total of 19 goals in all participations, he is the tournament's record scorer.

He was also in the squad for the Copa América 1997 and Copa América 2001 . He completed five games in a possible seven games and scored one goal. This he succeeded on July 20, 2001 in a 4-0 win against Bolivia , when he set the end point in the 84th minute.

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup , Fonseca has been in the Costa Rican squad three times. When they were first nominated in 2002 , the team only failed in the final against the USA. However, Fonseca was only used in two preliminary round matches, where he could ever score once. In 2003 , the team missed the final when they were eliminated in the semi-finals against Mexico . In the game for third place there was another reunion with the USA. Again you had to admit defeat. In this 2003 tournament, Fonseca played four out of five games and was able to sink the ball into the opponent's housing twice. After the attacker was not nominated in 2005, he was back on the team in 2007 . In four games, however, he failed to score and the team had to leave after the quarter-finals. In 2009 he was no longer appointed. At the end of his career, he played his last international match on March 26, 2011 in a friendly against China .
