Walter Centeno Corea (born October 6, 1974 in Palmar Sur ) is a former Costa Rican soccer player and national record player for his country.

Career

Centeno celebrated his debut in Costa Rica's highest league in 1995/96 with first division promoted AD Belén . A year later he was in the attacking midfield of the top club Deportivo Saprissa on the pitch and fought for the championship. He remained loyal to the capital city club except for a trip to Greece in 2002/03 to AEK Athens , where he played 14 league games (1 goal). With AEK he was also allowed to participate in the Champions League group stage, where his team survived the group games undefeated and he celebrated with two goals in guest appearances against Real Madrid and Rome (equalized 2-2 in Madrid and 1-1 in Rome) . His most successful period began after his return. In 2004 Saprissa became champion and he was named Player of the Year. And the following year they won the Champions Cup of Central and North America. In 2006 they became champions again.

For the national team of Costa Rica Walter Centeno belongs since 1995. He belonged to the core of nine players at the 2002 World Cup in Asia were there and again in the squad of Costa Rica for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany were. With 101 internationals, he was one of the three most experienced players in the squad. With his 125 international match on April 1, 2009 in the World Cup qualifier against El Salvador, he became the record player for his country. In total, he had made 137 international matches by November 18, 2009.
