Kristen Viikmäe (born February 10, 1979 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian football player and coach . The offensive player, who made his debut for the Estonian national team in 1997 , has played in his home country, Norway and Sweden throughout his career so far.

Career

Career start in Estonia and first international experience in Norway

Viikmäe comes from the youth of Tallinna Jalgpallikool . He came to FC Flora Tallinn in 1996 via Tallinna Sadam . For the club he then ran on in the Meistriliiga . He was quickly appointed to the national team the following year. At the side of players like Andres Oper , Indrek Zelinski and Martin Reim , he won his first title with the club in 1998, when the double from the championship title and the national cup was won. Since in the same year the style of play was changed from autumn-spring rhythm to the style of play in the calendar year, he won his second championship with the team in the shortened season. Therefore, he was also used twice in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League , against Steaua Bucharest and FK Partizan Belgrade , he was eliminated with the team early.

While Viikmäe had placed with the team behind FC Levadia Maardu , he made his final breakthrough during the 1999 season. After moving from opera to Denmark, one of two storm peaks, he scored twelve goals this season and attracted attention outside of the country's borders. Still active in Estonia in the first half of the following season, he moved to Norway in summer 2000.

For a million Norwegian kroner Viikmäe joined the Oslo club Vålerenga IF , overseen by coach Tom Nordlie . At the side of players like Per Espen Musæus , Aasmund Karl Bjørkan and Aki Riihilahti , he played seven games in the Tippeligaen by the end of the 2000 season , despite two goals this season he only reached one relegation place with the club . In the duels with Sogndal IL he was denied a goal and after a 2-2 draw and a 0-1 defeat he was relegated to the Adeccoligaen with the team . In the subsequent second division season, he had to take a break after Achilles tendon problems. Thus, he only helped with two goals in twelve games for direct promotion. As a result, however, he was no longer able to play permanently in the regular formation. In 2002 the club reached the cup final, in the 1-0 win against Odd Grenland with a goal from Bjørn Arild Levernes , he came as a substitute in stoppage time when he replaced Tobias Grahn on a short stint.

Since Viikmäe had not prevailed in the Tippeligaen , Vålerenga IF awarded him in 2003 to his former club Flora Tallinn in Estonia. With the reigning champions he formed the attack with goal Henning Hamre and Vjatšeslav Zahovaiko and contributed to winning the championship again with eleven goals this season. Then the Estonian club took him under contract and at the beginning of the following season, the international striker showed his goal danger.

Years abroad

Viikmäe left his homeland again in autumn 2004, this time moving to Sweden. The first division relegated Enköpings SK was in danger of relegation in the Superettan . Although he scored four goals in nine games for the east Swedish club, the team was denied relegation as third from bottom of the final table. But with his achievements he had rekindled interest in Norway. Also on loan, he joined Fredrikstad FK in February 2005 . After he was in the starting XI at the beginning of the first division season in 2005 , he was injured again in an international match. Due to the failure, the club decided not to exercise the purchase option at the end of the loan period in the summer. Viikmäe then returned to Estonia. Until the end of the season he played for Flora Tallinn and once again shone as a regular goalscorer. Thereupon Gefle IF reported interest in him and on loan he went to the Allsvenskan for a season , then he played again in Estonia.

In 2008 Viikmäe left Estonia again for Sweden. With the second division Jönköpings Södra IF he signed a contract with a term of two years. In the second division season in 2008 he finished third from last in the league with the club. Then the team met in the relegation games on Östers IF . After the first leg ended with a 1: 2 defeat, he was able to enter the goalscorer list as a two-time goalscorer alongside Tomas Backman in the 3-0 second leg win, which meant relegation. In the following season he contributed with eight goals this season to reach tenth place in the table.

After two seasons Viikmäe left the Swedish club and went to Greece. In the third-rate Football League 2 he ran for FC Panegialios .

Return to Estonia

At the beginning of the 2011 season Viikmäe signed a contract with JK Nõmme Kalju from the Estonian capital Tallinn . With the club from the Nõmme district , he was sensational runner-up behind the record champions Flora Tallinn. In November 2012, Viikmäe then took early retirement as an active and instead took up his new position as head of the youth department at Nõmme Kalju. In early March he continued his active career when he joined FC Haiba in the last Estonian football league. On the side, however, he continued to work as a youth leader and also took up his work as an assistant coach for the Estonian U-17 national team. About three and a half years after his last appearance for the national team, he played his farewell game in the national team of his home country on June 3, 2013, already as a player in the sixth and thus last Estonian league. The game in the capital Tallinn was lost 2-0 against the guests from Belarus .
