MEO is a Portuguese media company and a subsidiary of the telecommunications group Portugal Telecom . Until 2014 the company was called "TMN", the abbreviation for Telecomunicações Móveis Nacionais , in German roughly "National Mobile Communication".
MEO is based in Edifício Marconi , a rented office building on the northern edge of the center of the capital Lisbon .
history
With the outsourcing of the telecommunications sector from CTT to the new company Portugal Telecom and the privatization of the parent company in 1994/1995, TMN was no longer in state hands. TMN was the first GPRS operator in Portugal and on April 21, 2004 the company was the first to launch UMTS technology in the Western European country. Since 2008 TMN has also been selling mobile phones with HSDPA technology , also known as UMTS broadband . TMN was also the first company in Portugal to sell prepaid cards .
MEO is currently the market leader in Portugal in the field of mobile communications with 7.8 million mobile communications customers and a market share of 45.8 percent, ahead of NOS and Vodafone Portugal with 36.2 percent. In January 2014, the owner, Portugal Telecom, announced an extensive rebranding in order to bring all multimedia and communication businesses together under one brand. Since then, the company has been called MEO - Serviços de Comunicações e Multimédia, SA and, in addition to mobile communications, also offers DSL Internet and prepaid television.
