Javier Moreno Valera (born September 10, 1974 in Silla ), better known as Javi Moreno , is a former Spanish football player .

Career

society

Moreno's professional career began at FC Barcelona B in the Segunda División . After brief guest appearances at FC Córdoba and Yeclano Deportivo , he landed in the second half of the 1997/98 season for the first time at the then second division club Deportivo Alavés . The club rose at the end of the season, Moreno, however, decided to stay in the second division and moved to CD Numancia . There he developed into a key player in the 1998/99 season and contributed with his performance to the fact that Numancia rose to the Primera División for the first time in the club's history .

A short time after the promotion with Numancia, Moreno returned to Deportivo Alavés and finally made a name for himself there. In the 1999/2000 season he qualified for the UEFA Cup with the club from the Basque Country . In the 2000/01 season he was the third best scorer in the Spanish league with 22 goals. He and his team also caused a sensation at European level: Inter Milan were thrown out of the competition in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup . The club made it to the final at the first European Cup participation in the club's history. In the final against Liverpool FC , Alavés was 3-1 down at halftime before Moreno brought his team back into the game with a brace immediately after the break. The game then went into extra time and ultimately lost 4: 5.

Due to his performances this season, Moreno drew the interest of several top European clubs. For the 2001/02 season he then moved to Serie A for AC Milan . In Italy, however, Moreno could not prevail from the start. So he returned to Spain after only a year in Milan and signed a contract with Atlético Madrid , who had been promoted to the first division . Initially used regularly, Moreno had to push the bank more and more often in the Spanish capital. In the second half of the 2003/04 season he was then loaned to the Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League . There, too, the striker remained goalless and lost the final of the League Cup against Middlesbrough FC with the club .

Then Moreno made another club change and landed at Real Zaragoza . In Aragon , Moreno was initially a regular player. With a goal in the final second leg of the Supercopa de España 2004 against Valencia CF , he contributed to the title win. But then he only played 18 league games and took a radical step. He left the Spanish first division and moved to the Segunda División B , the third Spanish division, to his former club FC Córdoba . At this level Moreno found his old form again. In the 2006/07 season he was the top scorer in the league with 24 goals and helped his team to rise to the Segunda División . After three years in Córdoba , Moreno moved to the third division club UD Ibiza . Since he did not get the time he had hoped for there, he finally ended his career in 2008. A year later, Moreno returned to active football at the age of 35 and played a few games for third division club Lucena CF before finally ending his career.

National team

Moreno made his debut as a result of his strong 2000/01 season at Deportivo Alavés on February 28, 2001 for the Spanish national team in a friendly against England . During the year he played a total of five international matches and scored a goal in a qualifier for the 2002 World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina . Subsequently, however, he was no longer considered in the Selección .
