Kerim Volkan Kilimci (born February 16, 1972 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper and coach. Because of his work at Galatasaray Istanbul , he is associated with this association.

Player career

society

Volkan Kilimci began club football in the youth teams of the Istanbul club Zeytinburnuspor . Here he rose to the professional team with a professional contract for the 1990/91 season. Although he was in the first season without a substitute on the bench, he was discovered at the beginning of the season for the Turkish U-21 national team . So he first caught the eye of the football experts in his country. In the second season he fought for the position of regular goalkeeper and became one of the most noticeable young goalkeepers in the league.

For the 1992/93 season he moved to the first division club Gaziantepspor , but was mostly on the bench with the exception of four first division appearances. For the new season he was given to the second division Adanaspor . Here he immediately established himself as a regular goalkeeper and played for this club for two years.

Due to his performance at Adanaspor, several first division clubs were interested in Kilimci again. So he moved to Kocaelispor in the summer of 1995 . At this club he was only a substitute goalkeeper and took the place of the regular goalkeeper in the middle of the second half of the season. He also started the new season as a regular goalkeeper and became one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the league.

The coach of Istanbul's top club Galatasaray , Fatih Terim , who was looking for a good goalkeeper, showed interest in Kilimci and prompted Kilimci to be signed. At Galatasaray, they were dissatisfied with the recent performance of first goalkeeper Hayrettin Demirbaş , who was also the reigning national goalkeeper . This was made responsible for the failure in the European Cup Winners' Cup of the 1996/97 season . Here Galatasaray met French cup winner Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 . The first leg was won 4-2, with both goals being the result of goalkeeping errors. The second leg they lost 0: 4, with two of the four goals conceded by the press and the coaching staff from obvious goalkeeping errors. After this end in the European Cup Winners' Cup, Demirbaş was particularly negative at the quarter-finals of the Turkish Football Cup of the 1996/97 season . In the extra time against Gençlerbirliği Ankara , the game ended after extra time 1: 1. In the penalty shootout, Gençlerbirliği won the game 17:16. Since Demirbaş as the reigning national goalkeeper could not save any of the total of 17 penalties, Terim decided to remove Demirbaş from the team in any case during the winter break and replace him with a new goalkeeper. Demirbaş also received negative reviews from the specialist press. Since there was a quota of three players from foreigners in Turkish football at the time and this was already booked at Galatasaray, it was decided to bring in a local goalkeeper. So Terim decided to commit Kilimci and prompted the club management to sign this player. Galatasaray tried to use midfielder Evren Turhan in return, who had been signed by Kocaelispor a year ago. Finally, both sides reached an agreement and so Kilimci moved to Galatasaray in December 1996. In return, Kocaelispor received Turhan and a transfer fee of US $ 300,000 .

Moved to Galatasaray, Kilimci made his debut during a league game on December 21, 1996 against Bursaspor . With the end of the first half of the season, Kilimci experienced problems with his military service and was not released from the Turkish armed forces for the winter preparation camp. The club's management tried to also sign the German-Turkish goalkeeper Pierre Esser from Fortuna Düsseldorf . Since Kilimci only took part in team training one day after the start of the second half of the season and Galatasaray had signed Esser in the meantime, Esser was in goal on the first day of the second half of the season. Due to the missed preparation, Kilimci sat on the bench for the first match days of the second half of the season and had to give preference to Esser or the third goalkeeper Mehmet Duymazer . After both goalkeepers fell short of coach Terim's expectations, Kilimci took over the goal and remained the regular goalkeeper until the end of the season. His team reached the Turkish championship at the end of the season . During the season Kilimci established himself in the national team and ousted the long-undisputed Rüştü Reçber in two matches. In the second season at Galatasaray Kilimci also started as a regular goalkeeper. This season he was particularly noticeable in his team's games in the UEFA Champions League . It was only in the first group game at home against Borussia Dortmund that he was heavily criticized by the specialist press. On the 3rd day of the Champions League, Galatasaray lost 3-0 away to Sparta Prague . Even with this defeat Kilimci was seen as one of the main culprits. He was also blamed several times for his team's point losses in the national league. So Terim once again prompted the club's management to look for a new goalkeeper. It was even mentioned that the contract of one of the foreign field players could be terminated and that a foreign goalkeeper could be obtained for the vacated foreigner spot. But since no suitable goalkeeper could be found within the winter transfer period and Kilimci showed an ascending form curve, the goalkeeper question was postponed to the end of the season. After Kilimci either failed due to an injury or showed poor performance again, he lost his regular place to Mehmet Duymazer at the start of the second half of the season. At the end of the season, his team managed to defend their title in the Turkish championship. In addition, the title was defended in the Turkish Supercup .

For the 1998/99 season , Galatasaray signed Cláudio Taffarel, an internationally known goalkeeper. Kilimci received a contract extension before Taffarel's commitment, but refused to move to another club a little later. So he stayed under contract with Galatasaray for two more years without participating in team training. He later went to court against his club for unpaid salaries and brought about an enforcement. For the second half of the 1999/2000 season, Kilimci then arranged with the club and was again involved in team training.

In August 2000 Kilimci moved with some other teammates to the Belgian first division club KSK Beveren . He played for this club for two seasons and left the club after the players' salaries were not paid at the end.

For the 2002/03 season he returned to Turkey and moved to third division club Küçükköyspor . After just one season he left Küçükköyspor and went to league rivals Eskişehirspor . He also only played one season for this club and then moved on to Fatih Karagümrük SK . After he was active for two seasons for Karagümrük, he played one more season for Yıldırım Bosnaspor and then ended his active professional football career in the summer of 2007.

National team

Kilimci played twice for the Turkish U-21 national team while at Zeytinburnuspor .

In 1996 he was, at that time at Kocaelispor operates from the coach Mustafa Denizli as part of a World Cup 1998 qualifying match against the national team of San Marino in the squad of the Turkish national team nominated, but sat in this encounter on the bench.

After four other nominations, he made his international debut in the Crimean Cup on June 15, 1997 against the Japanese national team .

On January 21, 1998, he played in a friendly against the Albanian national team one more time and for the last time for the national team of his country.

Coaching career

For the 2010/11 season he took over the post of goalkeeping coach at the second division Kartalspor and assisted the head coach and Kilimci's former teammate Ergün Penbe .
