The Kohlenberg is an elevation in the city of Basel , west of the Rhine . There are various schools, the St. Leonhard Church and the Music Academy of the City of Basel . A street named after the elevation is used by tram line 3 . The coal mountain is directly adjacent to the old town .

Due to the steep gradient on the Kohlenberg of 7.96% - according to the railway ordinance, a 4% gradient is permitted for new lines, and a maximum of 7% gradient under special conditions - only highly motorized trams are allowed to run on this line.
