Osman Özdemir (born September 1, 1961 in Adapazarı ) is a former Turkish soccer player and current coach.
Career
As a player
Osman Özdemir played in various Süper-Lig and TFF-1.-Lig clubs in the 80s and 90s . He is associated with this association through his many years of work at Gençlerbirliği Ankara . He is seen by both the fans and the club as one of the most important players in the club's history. With Gençlerbirliği he was able to win the Turkish Football Cup in the 1986/87 season .
With Adanaspor he reached the championship of the TFF 1st Lig in the 1987/88 season and thus promoted to the Süper Lig .
In 1996 he ended his career as an active player at the then Istanbul third division club Mithatpaşaspor .
As a trainer
Following his playing career, he decided to start a coaching career. His first activity was the position of assistant coach at Sakaryaspor . He then took over the same post at Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Çaykur Rizespor .
In 2002/03 he took over Kırıkkalespor and thus worked for the first time as head coach. But after a short time he separated from this club.
Following this activity, he worked in succession at Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Diyarbakırspor again as an assistant coach.
In February 2006 he became the head coach of Çankırıspor . He held this position for about a year.
On the 27th matchday of the 2006/07 season he replaced the resigned coach Metin Diyadin at the second division side Gençlerbirliği Oftaş . He was able to hold the top of the table with this club and reached the championship of the TFF 1st Lig at the end of the season and thus direct promotion to the Süper Lig . After some bad results in the Süper Lig, he was removed from the post of head coach.
In the following seasons he coached Orduspor and Adanaspor .
In the summer of 2011 he took over the financially stricken relegated Konyaspor . This club was punished by UEFA with a transfer ban. In addition, most of the seasoned professionals parted with this club. Özdemir was forced to form a powerful team for the upcoming TFF 1st Lig season with a few professionals and many young players . Contrary to expectations, he sat down with the team early on at the top of the table and reached the playoffs of the 1st Lig at the end of the season. At the end of the season it was announced that Özdemir will leave the club.
A few days before the start of PTT-1. Lig 2012/13 season he was introduced as the successor to the resigned coach Güvenç Kurtar . With this team he did not have a good start to the season. After his team lost 5-1 to Kayseri Erciyesspor on Matchday 5 and the team was second to last in the table with two points from five games, Özdemir resigned from his position. Three days after his resignation, Mustafa Uğur was introduced as his successor.
On January 31, 2013 he was presented to the second division Kartalspor as the successor to Özcan Kızıltan, who had previously resigned . He should initially look after the team until the end of the season. After the 28th matchday he resigned from his position and was replaced a little later by Mehmet Altıparmak .
