Chief of the National Guard Bureau
The Chief of the National Guard Bureau (CNGB, German about (to staff) Chief of the National Guard Office ) is the highest ranking officer of the National Guard of the United States and head of the Ministry of Defense assumed National Guard Bureau in Arlington , Virginia .
The position has been upgraded several times over the years, since 2008 the CNGB has held the rank of general and is also a member of the United States General Staff of the Armed Forces . Since the National Guard only consists of branches of the Army and Air Force , but not marine components, the position is generally occupied by an officer from the United States Army (USA) or the United States Air Force (USAF).
function
The Chief of the National Guard Bureau is responsible for the organization and all operations of the National Guard. He is nominated by the US President for a four-year term on the proposal of the Department of Defense and must be approved by the Senate with a simple majority.
The CNGB acts on behalf of the Chairman of the United Joint Chiefs of Staff as an advisor to the Secretary of Defense on federal issues relating to the National Guard, as well as adviser to the Secretary of the Army and the Chief of Staff of the US Army and the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the US Air Force .
General Joseph L. Lengyel (USAF) has served as CNGB since August 2016 .

flag
The command flag of the CNGB shows a golden eagle on a ground in two different shades of blue. The darker blue is the color of the US Army, the lighter that of the US Air Force, the two arrows in the top right corner symbolize the National Guard's aviation units. With the upgrading of the position of the CNGB to a four-star position in 2008, four silver stars were added to the flag, which were not included in older versions (see illustration on the right).
