General Joseph L. Lengyel (born September 25, 1959 ) is a general in the United States Air Force . He has been Commander of the United States National Guard ( English Chief of the National Guard Bureau , CNGB ) since August 2016 .

Life

Lengyel earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of North Texas at Denton and joined the military through the University of North Texas reservist program. He trained as a pilot with the United States Air Force (USAF) and was an instructor as an F-16 pilot and squadron leader. He subsequently held various senior positions with the USAF and the Air National Guard . Among other things, he was commander of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing in Afghanistan , military attaché in Cairo and Vice Commander of the First Air Force (Air Forces Northern) at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. In 2011 he received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee .

As of August 2, 2012, he was deputy chief of the National Guard Bureau (Arlington, VA) . He has been Commander of the United States National Guard ( CNGB ) since August 3, 2016 . Lengyel is the 28th officer in the CNGB's position since its inception in 1911; He is also a member of the United General Staff of the United States Armed Forces . The National Guard Bureau subordinate to him, a semi-independent organizational unit of the Department of Defense , controls the National Guard of the United States established in 1903, which in turn consists of the national guard units of the individual US states . The National Guard Bureau is advised by the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the National Guard Bureau on all matters relating to the training and use, health of the forces, and the professional development of National Guard soldiers and Airmen .
