Fort Campbell, Kentucky
Fort Campbell is a United States Army base located approximately 10 miles northwest of Clarksville , Tennessee and ten miles south of Hopkinsville , Kentucky .
The site was selected on July 16, 1941 and is named in memory of Brigadier General William Bowen Campbell . It was initially called Camp Campbell until it was renamed as a permanent base at Fort Campbell in April 1950. Fort Campbell is home to various units of the United States Army , for example the 101st US Airborne Division and the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) (Eng. " 5th Special Forces Brigade").
The official name is "Fort Campbell, Kentucky" because the headquarters of the base, most of the buildings of the base and the post office are in the Kentucky area. Most of the area of the base is in Tennessee. Fort Campbell is the largest economy in the Clarksville area.
Fort Campbell was built on the territory of four counties, two of which are in Tennessee ( Montgomery and Stewart Counties ) and two in Kentucky ( Christian and Trigg Counties ).
The commanding general of Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division is currently Major General James C. McConville. The garrison commander is Colonel Perry C. Clark.
