John W. Nicholson Jr. (born May 8, 1957 ) is a general in the United States Army (USA) and was in command of Mission Resolute Support (formerly International Security Assistance Force , ISAF) and US Forces Afghanistan ( USFOR-A).

Life

John W. Nicholson, Jr. studied history at Georgetown University and military science at National Defense University . In the 1990s he was on duty in Sarajevo. From 2006 to 2012 he served in Afghanistan. Most recently he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division. From March 3, 2016 to August 31, 2018, Nicholson Jr. was Commander in Chief of Mission Resolute Support and USFOR-A, succeeding General John F. Campbell . Austin S. Miller followed Nicholson .

On the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift , Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen awarded him the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany.
