A survey by the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is cited as the source . It has been Hong Kong's first free English-language newspaper since September 2007. The newspaper's main competitor for young Chinese readers is still the English-language South China Morning Post .

history

The newspaper was originally founded by the Burmese-Chinese entrepreneur Aw Boon Haw (including Tiger Balm ) after the Second World War under the name " Hong Kong Tiger Standard " ( 標準 虎 報  /  标准 虎 报 ) in the spring of March 1, 1949, as against At the end of the Chinese Civil War, numerous US-trained journalists came to Hong Kong. They formed the basis of the first English-language newspaper in what was then the crown colony , where the editorial responsibility lay solely with the Chinese.

format

The print edition appears in the classic small format of tabloids .

In terms of content, the newspaper relies on a “lively mix” of local and international news as well as sections such as sport, business and technology. Depending on the day of the week, there are also specific focus topics - such as market reports on Monday (" Money Glitz ") and entertainment - and lifestyle topics on Friday (" Weekend Glitz "). In the media data is also highlighted that the contents are easy to consume ( " English easy to read ").

distribution

In 2012 the print run was just over 200,000 copies. According to media data, the corresponding website achieved over one million page impressions per month in 2016 .

Incident - Circulation Fraud

In the mid-1990s, the magazine was investigated because it had artificially increased its circulation in order to generate higher advertising prices or advertising income. The starting point was a find of 14,000 copies on a pier by the "Independent Commission Against Corruption" - ICAC ( Independent Commission Against Corruption , 廉政 公署 ) in August 1996. As part of the investigation, the "Anti-Corruption Commission" - ICAC found that from 1994 to 1997 the circulation numbers of the Standard and the Sunday Standard were routinely kept high by means of a quasi- nonexistent company called " Mornstar ". The “fictitious” company purchased a significant number of copies for a fee and in return issued invoices for services that were never performed. Three employees responsible were sentenced to prison terms of between four and six months, Aw Sian (aka Sally Aw Sian, 胡仙 ) as owner of the publishing company was due to the intervention of the then Minister of Justice ( English Secretary for Justice ) Elsie Leung ( 梁愛詩  /  梁爱诗 ) not indicted because, from their point of view, it is not in the public interest to prosecute the owner with insufficient evidence. In addition, some of the contents of the ICAC interrogation protocol came to the public, so that there were further legal concerns for a legally fair trial, based on biased public prejudice against the accused. The legal independence and reputation of the Hong Kong legal system are at stake and will be damaged internationally as a result.
