The student residence hall (ESA) is a student residence hall on the campus of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . ESA stands for "energy-saving architecture". The dormitory was built between 1981 and 1987. Inspired by the construction was the Ministry of Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate having regard to other DIY projects like the student dormitory Bauhäusle block in Stuttgart or Erdhügelhäuser the dormitory Stuttgart-Hohenheim. The building owner was the Studentenwerk Kaiserslautern eV

The special features of the construction of this dormitory were the strong involvement of students in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and spatial and environmental planning in the design and implementation, as well as the novelty of the objective of building an energy-self-sufficient house using solar energy . Another characteristic of the ESA is the strong inclusion of nature and plants through the peripheral location on the Palatinate Forest as well as in the residential building itself. The house-in-house principle reinforces the effect of the house as a living biotope. It gives it the typical character of a greenhouse with a residential function.

The house extends over an area of over 500 m² and can accommodate 20 students.

The dormitory was listed as a historical monument in 2019 .
