The Catholic Chapel of St. Johannes Evangelist is a listed church building in Berge , a district of Medebach in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The church dates from 1699 and was inaugurated by Prior Petrus Cramer. The church has 12 images of the apostles from Glindfeld Monastery . However, they originally come from Flanders and were created in the late 17th century. After the Augustinian monastery in Glindfeld was dissolved, they were sold to the monk Anton Vogt from the hamlet of Roninghausen . The pictures of the apostles were later given to the church in Berge. Some important works of art have moved from Glindfeld to the church in Berge, for example a few wooden parts of the Glindfeld coat of arms can be found on the high altar from the 18th century. The altarpiece showing the crucifixion of Jesus comes from the Rubens school and was painted in Flanders in the early 18th century.

The small plastered hall church has a recessed choir with bevelled corners. The year 1773 is on a chronogram . The west facade with the rococo portal is structured by pilasters . The gable is crowned with a bell ridge , above a stepped baroque hood. The interior is dominated by sandstone pilasters that support a stuccoed wooden vault . The Latin words Ecce Agnus Dei qui est omnibus salus (Behold the Lamb of God, who is salvation for all) are written above the entrance .
