Jan Sibbersen (born June 9, 1975 in Coburg ) is a German swimmer, triathlete and entrepreneur . Since 2018 he has held the swimming course record at the Ironman Hawaii .
Career
In 1992 Jan Sibbersen started for the SV Coburg in international swimming competitions. In Stockholm he broke the 16-minute mark (15: 59.67 min) for the first time in an 8-nation youth comparison match in his then parade discipline of 1500 meters freestyle.
In 1996 he broke off his English and sports studies in Heidelberg and moved to the United States at the University of Miami, where he took up an "Economics degree" (a combination of economics and business administration). He was accepted at Harvard University for his academic and athletic achievements .
In 2000, he narrowly missed the Olympic qualification. In 2002 and again in 2005 he was Bavarian triathlon champion.
Triathlon professional career
In 2004 he won the German Triathlon Championship (in the AG25) on the middle distance in Kulmbach. He is one of the best swimmers in the long distance and regularly finished the first discipline while in the lead. At the Ironman Hawaii, he achieved five times the fastest swimming time of the day in his six participations. In the list of the top 10 fastest men in the sub-disciplines, he ranks third (2003) and one (2018).
2007 Founding of Sailfish GmbH
After the temporary termination of his active triathlon career, Sibbersen founded the company Sailfish in 2007 , which deals with the development and sale of neoprene suits for swimming and triathlon sports. The company's name is also the brand name for their neoprene suits. Since 2016 he has been the manager of the triathlete Patrick Lange , the winner of the Ironman Hawaii in 2017 and 2018.
Comeback 2017 and swimming record at Ironman Hawaii 2018
In October 2017, Sibbersen announced another attack on the best swimming times and started the Ironman Hawaii for the fifth time. He finished the swim as sixth fastest of the day after 48:32 minutes. In 2018, the 43-year-old started for the sixth time in Hawaii and set a new best time for the swimming distance in 46:29 minutes. He improved Lars Jorgensen's course record since 1995 .
