The castle ruin Khünburg is the ruin of a rock castle on a cliff at 839 meters above sea level on the southern slope of the Spitzegel northeast of Lake Pressegger in the municipality of Hermagor in Carinthia .

history

The Khünburg was first mentioned in a document in 1189 as the property of Ministerial Count Pero de Kinburch from the Austrian noble family von Kuenburg .

From the 13th century the castle was owned by the Bamberg diocese . In 1311 the complex was pledged to Duke Heinrich of Carinthia . After the fire of 1540 or 1541, the castle was left to decay. The Khünburgers relocated to Khünegg Castle in Egg (Hermagor) .

A restoration took place in 1913.

description

The Romanesque complex was built around 1200. It is about 30 by 40 meters. No major structural changes were made after the middle of the 14th century.

The 15 meter high keep , which is now used as a lookout point, large parts of the five to eight meter high ring wall and the ground floor wall of a residential building south of the keep are well preserved.
