Charles Francis Adams, Jr.
Charles Francis Adams Jr. ( May 27, 1835 - May 20, 1915 ) was an American brigadier general , entrepreneur and historian.
origin
Adams came from the Adams family , a prominent Boston political family. Both his great-grandfather, John Adams, and his grandfather, John Quincy Adams, were Presidents of the United States . His father Charles Francis Adams, Sr. was ambassador to Great Britain during the American Civil War and was instrumental in maintaining British neutrality during that war.
Career
Charles Francis graduated from the renowned Harvard University in 1856 . Then he took part in the civil war on the side of the Union and brought it up to the rank of Brevet Brigadier General.
After the war he became a member of the Massachusetts Railroad Commission and stood out as a supporter of the entrepreneurs. In 1871 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Between 1884 and 1890 he was President of the Union Pacific Railroad .
family
Adams married Mary Elizabeth Ogden on November 8, 1865. The two had three daughters Mary Ogden ("Molly") Adams, Louisa Catherine Adams and Elizabeth Ogden ("Elise") Adams and the two twin sons John Adams (1875-1964) and Henry Adams (1875-1951).
His nephew (not, as is often claimed, his son) Charles Francis Adams III was Secretary of the Navy under President Herbert C. Hoover and known for his passion for sailing.
The grounds of the Adams family home in Quincy near Boston, where five generations of the politically influential family lived, is designated as the Adams National Historical Park .
