John Ely Burchard

John Ely Burchard (born December 8, 1898 in Marshall , Minnesota , † December 25, 1975 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American architectural critic and historian and President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Life

Burchard began studying at the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota , but had to interrupt it after two and a half years because he was called up to the Army Medical Corps in France during the First World War . After the war he continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained a BS degree in 1923 and a Master’s degree in 1925. He then worked in industry for thirteen years. In 1938 he returned to MIT, where he received a professorship. During the Second World War he was active from 1940 to 1945 for the National Research Council and the National Defense Research Committee . He was chairman of the Scientific Information Policy and Natural Resource Conservation Committees. He led missions in various war zones. In 1948 he was awarded the Medal for Merit by President Harry S. Truman for his services during the war .

He was the first dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science at MIT, which was founded in 1950, and in this role, which he held until 1969, developed its profile in teaching and research. In 1950 Burchard was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, from 1954 to 1957 he was its president. He is the author of numerous publications on the history and criticism of architecture. He became particularly well known for a monograph on the architectural history of America (together with Albert Bush-Brown), which was translated into several languages. In 1966 he published a book on post-war architecture in Germany: The Voice of the Phoenix .
