Peter Grottian (* 27. May 1942 in Wuppertal , † 29. October 2020 in Bregenz ) was a German social scientist and political activist of the left spectrum.

Life

Grottian studied social sciences in Berlin and Freiburg . In 1973 he received his doctorate in political science from Bielefeld University . From 1979 to 2007 he was Professor of Political Science at the Otto Suhr Institute (OSI) at the Free University of Berlin . The seminars he led dealt, among other things, with political participation , local decision-making processes and powerful actors . He often presented the results of his scientific reflection in broad media. Together with Wolf-Dieter Narr, who teaches at the same institutehe gave up a third of his own position in order to finance a gender professorship at the institute.

In addition to his work as a university lecturer , which he has been doing part-time since 1985 out of political conviction , Grottian volunteered in various political initiatives . These included the Committee for Fundamental Rights and Democracy and the Berlin banking scandal initiative it co-founded . He was also an official supporter of the surveillance-critical data protection demonstration Freedom Instead of Fear . He was also a member of Attac's scientific advisory board . In particular, Grottian's engagement against the price increases and the abolition of the social ticket at the Berlin transport company , which he and others drew attention to several times with spectacular fare- dodging campaigns, made headlines. The Berlin judiciary investigated several times against him, and conservative local politicians repeatedly demanded that he be released from civil service . But all of this remained without disciplinary or criminal law for Grottian. According to reports of the news magazine Der Spiegel in June 2006 Grottian was from 2003 including through V-persons from the protection of the constitution of the country observed but apparently there was no file on him. The process also became an issue in the Constitutional Protection Committee of the Berlin House of Representatives .

At the end of the summer semester 2007 Peter Grottian retired . Nevertheless, he remained active as an activist and commentator, for example on sociopolitical issues or Stuttgart 21 . In June 2018, Grottian called for field occupations against the pesticide glyphosate . At the end of 2019, he criticized the protest actions by climate activists such as Luisa Neubauer and Extinction Rebellion , who had discussed their occupations with the police. They are more concerned with getting into the news than with civil disobedience .

According to information from his environment, Grottian died on October 29, 2020 in a hospital in Bregenz .
