Johannes Grimholt (also: Grymmolt, Grimmolt, Grymmelt ; * around 1450 in Lübeck ; † May 27, 1523 there ) was a German clergyman and, as John VIII. From 1510 until his death in 1523, Bishop of Lübeck .

Life

The son of the Lübeck citizen and merchant Hinrich Grimholt, who had donated a vicarie at the Marienkirche on December 21, 1474, was enrolled at the University of Rostock in May 1470 and acquired the academic degree of a Baccalaurus of the seven liberal arts there in the winter semester of 1471/1472 . He continued his studies in 1474 at the University of Cologne , earned his master's degree in philosophy, and after studying in 1478 at the University of Erfurt , he is referred to as a licentiate in law.

He became a clergyman, presumably had also taken over his father's endowed vicariate and was promoted to canon at Lübeck Cathedral . On January 10, 1510 he was elected Bishop of Lübeck and confirmed in this office on April 8, 1510. In that capacity he redeemed various pledged goods from the tenure of Albert II. Krummendiek and also undertook many efforts in Eutin to expand the bishopric.

He enfeoffed Christian II of Denmark in 1513 and Friedrich I with Holstein in 1522 . In addition, he privately paid for the printing of the Lübeck prayer book Horae Canonicae in Nuremberg in 1513. The evolving movement of the Reformation did not have a significant impact on his tenure. After his death he was buried in the northeast corner of the choir in Lübeck Cathedral; since 1886 his grave slab has been on the west wall of the south aisle. The Latin inscription first uses Arabic numbers for the date of his death.
