Wilhelm Westphal (Bishop)
Wilhelm Westphal , also Westval or Westfal (* 1443 in Lübeck ; † December 31, 1509 ibid) was Bishop of Lübeck .
Life
Wilhelm Westphal was the son of the mayor Johann Westphal and Margaretha von Calven. He had enrolled at the University of Rostock in May 1457 and there acquired the academic degree of Bachelor of the Seven Liberal Arts in the winter semester of 1459/60 . He became a canon in Lübeck, was a notary of the Roman Rota and briefly archdeacon in Stargard and later became provost of the cathedral in Lübeck. On August 30, 1506 he was elected Bishop of Lübeck. On November 27, 1506 he received papal confirmation and on August 22, 1507 he was ordained a bishop . He consecrated the Church of St. Anne in 1508 , but did not make any particular appearances during his brief tenure. He was buried in the choir of the Lübeck Cathedral . His grave slab with the figure of the blessing bishop was erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries on the southern wall of the choir by the rood screen, where it has been preserved to this day.
The Lübeck councilor Heinrich Westfal was his brother.
