Manfred Caspari

Manfred Caspari (born January 27, 1925 in Dresden , † May 27, 2010 in Munich ) was a German economist.

Career

Caspari studied economics and received his doctorate in 1958 from the University of Tübingen . Between 1951 and 1955 he initially worked for the mineral oil company Esso AG , then moved to the Federal Ministry of Economics in 1956 , where in 1958 he became head of the department for price policy.

From 1963 to 1968 he was Deputy Head of Cabinet of the European Competition Commissioner Hans von der Groeben and coordinated the tax and legal harmonization. From 1968 to 1970 he was head of cabinet responsible for the internal market and regional policy. During the negotiations for the first enlargement of the European Community, Caspari was deputy head of the delegation for the accession and free trade area negotiations from 1970. From 1973 to 1974 he was head of the cabinet of Commissioner Finn Olav Gundelachresponsible for internal market and customs union. In 1974 he became Deputy Director General for External Relations and in 1981 Director General for Competition (anti-trust, state aid, state trade monopolies). In 1989 he left the European Commission .

From 1990 to 1993 he was President of the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine in Koblenz and from 1990 to 1996 Non-Executive Director at Hercules Inc. in Wilmington (USA). From 1995 he was also President of the German Section of the International Association of Former Members of the European Communities.
